The Galvatrons - Santa Cruz

"I want to take you home tonight"

It's my duty every few months to remind everyone how jaw-droppingly brilliant The Galvatrons are. They're my favorite new band of 2008 and I'm waiting very patiently for the album to come out (by the end of this year? early 2009?). What I do know is that a new single's due to be released in October with a video, and if you're as obsessed as I am you might want to check out their youtube behind-the-scenes videos, which are actually pretty boring but completely redeemed by the fact that you can hear snippets of a new epic epic epic track in the background. As for today, I'm posting a demo from the guys. Santa Cruz is such a fun, singalong track. It's completely silly and over-the-top, given all the gravitas of a rock opera. And it definitely heightens the Van Halen comparisons, with guitar work straight out of Panama. Rest assured that as soon as the new single comes out, you'll hear about it on this blog. I love this band.

Towers Of London - Naked On The Dancefloor

"Dancing under the discoball"

I'm not generally a fan of this band. Not yet, at least. They've got some convincing to do. However, I am quite fond of this odd little song from their forthcoming second album Fizzy Pop (Paul, did they consult with you on this choice?). Naked On The Dancefloor has got a killer guitar riff and a super catchy chorus. The frustrating thing is that I wish the vocals had a bit more oomph to them. I do hope that the rest of the album follows along the style of this track, because there's definitely potential here for a good party record. Maybe they can even end up turning me into a fan. More songs like this would definitely help.

Those Dancing Days - Home Sweet Home

"Home sweet home, this is where I belong"

I'm not sure I'll ever really get Swedish girl-band Those Dancing Days. It's not for lack of trying. I've watched all their videos, seen them live, and now listened to their debut album, but I'm still not sold. I like most of the singles (Hitten is still gorgeous) and some of the album tracks, and I love lead singer Linnea's vocals, but overall the music doesn't quite connect with me. I think it's due to a lack of really strong hooks on many of the tracks. Still, the band's got a few absolute gems, and Home Sweet Home is one of them. It definitely doesn't lack a strong hook. In fact, it's got a singalong chorus that's been in my head for the past few days. It's the kind of song that just makes you really happy when you listen to it. I also love the video. Very fun.
